Free Tour Porto
Let yourself be seduced by the charm of Porto
The Portuguese Holy Week has things in common with the Easter in other countries of the world, but it also has its particularities, such as certain typical Easter meals or the traditional "folar" cake.
Beyond processions and image worship, Portugal keeps alive other Easter behaviours that should be considered when visiting Porto or Lisbon. In the case of folar, this tradition dates back many centuries and experts do not agree on its origin. Folar is a sweet and dry bread cake filled with eggs that godparents give to their godchildren on Easter Sunday as a symbol of union and friendship. In exchange, young men give an olive branch to men and a bouquet of violets to women. This custom continues until the age of 18 or until the sponsored person marries, although more and more traditions are being lost.
In the north of Portugal and rural areas surrounding Porto, as well as on the border with Galicia and León, these traditions are still quite alive, however, in large cities, gifts have been replaced by chocolate eggs, very typical in others countries.
One of the things that the traveller should appreciate in any of their trips is the immersion in the local culture, which is one of the main objectives of our guides when they do the free tour through Porto. In addition to monuments, they will show you both curiosities and striking traditions of the country. For a good experience on a short 2-day getaway in Porto, for example, choosing a tour with the green umbrella will not disappoint.
