Matosinhos: the place of the seafood in Porto

Matosinhos: the place of the seafood in Porto | Blog

When you think about what to do in Porto and its surroundings, one of the places that comes quickly to your mind, generally on the recommendation of a friend, is to go to Matosinhos to eat fish.

Matosinhos was, years ago, one of the favourite places to eat fish on the outskirts of Porto for its quality, but especially for its price. Where does this tradition come from? Well, in the beginning, Matosinhos was a small fishing district with typical houses and long beaches, where the small fishing boats would stay. However, today things have changed.

The place became more and more popular, so the large real estate companies have moved to this piece of the Atlantic coast to make their little “northern Portuguese Benidorm”, and nothing remains of that typical image. Today, a vast sea of enormous buildings and hotels on the beachfront meet the outer port of Porto, the port of Leixões, where gigantic freighters and cranes abound. What are we left with then? Well, the fish and the beach. In the case of the second, it is still very long and beautiful, although its waves and wind make it not advisable to go with young children, in fact they have installed some artificial swimming payed pools on the coast, although it’s crowded in summer. And on the other hand, we have the seafood, which is still of high quality and fresh, but the typical bars are becoming harder to find, and their prices are higher, adjusting it to the demand they have.

Is it worth going to Matosinhos then? As always, it depends. In the case of looking for a typical and quiet place to eat good fish, we recommend Afurada, the south of the Douro estuary, still safe from overcrowding and full of short houses with coloured azulejos (tiles). Of course, there are plenty of good places to eat fish without having to leave Porto, the decision is up to each one of you.

The only thing that is essential is to join our free tour of Porto, we are totally confident about this, since in addition to history and monuments the guides who collaborate with us will be able to advise you much more in detail on good places to eat in Porto.
