What to do in Porto? Ten must-sees

Porto is the Portuguese city where Carnival is celebrated with more intensity. Porto is World Heritage City and the European Capital of the culture and it won’t be a surprise. Its attractiveness is very important, making it one of the most visited cities in Portugal, and one of the favourite destinations for the travellers of all ages.

 ·       Ribeira: it’s one of the unavoidable points during your visit to the city: the alleys, the colourful streets, the terraces by the river. If you Cross the Douro river, the Dom Luis I bridge of Eiffel and the panoramic views from Vila Nova de Gaia are amazing.

·       Clérigos tower: one of the icons of the city, with more than 70 meters (230 feet), it allows you to enjoy the best views of Porto.

·       Port wine cellars in Gaia: Although they are not strictly in Porto, the visit is required.

·       Lello e Irmão bookstore: popularly known as “Harry Potter’s library”. It’s also one of the must-sees in Porto. You’ll always find a big queue, but it deserves the effort.

·       Porto Cathedral: it’s the most important religious monument of the city. It has been declared a national monument. Do not miss the visit to the cloister or the photographs of the extraordinary panoramic view that can be seen from the outside.

·       São Bento railway station: despite being a train station, and working as such, it has been declared Patrimony of the Humanity, so it must have something. And it has more than 20.000 tiles (azulejos) showing the Portuguese history that delight especially those who visit it at night.

·       Bolhão Market: Very central. It’s one of the busiest and most popular areas in Porto: Bolhão Market, where since 1914 is sold meat, fish, fruit, flowers and many other products.

·       Palácio da Bolsa: one of the most emblematic and visited buildings in the city. With a luxuriously decorated interior, currently it’s the headquarters of the Association of Merchants.

·       Café Majestic: Must visit in the city. Opened for the public in 1920, it’s been declared the most beautiful coffeeshop in the world. Having a coffee and learning about its history is and it’s worth.

Carnival in Ovar: the great feast

If you want to enjoy Carnival in style, of course you can do it. Barely half an hour from Porto, the village of Ovar celebrates entrudo festivities, attracting thousands of people from all over the Portugal every year.

 

In the Carnival of Ovar is attended by more than 2.000 walk-ons. The most celebrated days are the day of Entrudo Parade (Quinquagesima Sunday and Shrove Tuesday), and the night of Monday.
